‘Solar Tree’ to light up Clerkenwell Design Week

'Solar Tree'

A ‘Solar Tree’ designed by Ross Lovegrove and manufactured by Artimide will be lighting up St John’s Square in London during Clerkenwell Design Week (22-24 May).

The six-metre high tree will gather solar energy through photovoltaic cells in the ten ‘heads’ of the organic structure and then store it in batteries integrated into the base. Four of the ten ‘heads’ and additional ten ‘blades of grass’ will then light up the evening street with LEDs from dusk to dawn.

Industrial designer Lovegrove believes that street furniture like this could be used to meet society’s demands for a public energy source to tap into – from chargers for mobile phones and laptops to plug-ins to power cars.

Artimide said the Solar Tree, which costs more than £90,000, began as a research piece but is now in series production

Earth Hour: Park Hotels to switch off lights this Saturday

In a first of its kind initiative by any hotel chain in India, the Park Hotels today said it would switch off lights at all their properties across India to observe Earth Hour tomorrow night.

Earth Hour would also be observed in the other properties owned by the Kolkata-based Apeejay Surrendra group which runs the luxury hotel chain like the Oxford Bookstores, real estate properties, two schools and 50,000 acres of tea plantations area in Assam. Earth Hour is an initiative by the international wildlife and international body WWF where citizens and organisations around the globe show their support for action on climate change by turning off lights for one hour from 8.30 pm.

A company spokesperson told PTI that all the twelve Park Hotels located in various cities will participate in the Earth Hour and will switch off non-essential lights and internally will switch to minimal lighting. Special lights and smoke-free candles will be placed in the rooms to be used in emergency situation.

Candlelight dinners are being organised in the restaurants and ‘Earth cocktail’ served at bars to create a buzz and to excite the guests towards the cause. According to a statement by the company, the total units of energy saved at their hotels will be 5000 KW for that one hour while that for real estate properties will be 2000 KW.

Last year, Earth Hour reached out to over a billion people with a little over 6 million Indians participating in this global show of support. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as the national brand ambassador of the cause.

Plumen added to permanent collection at the V&A

Image

The Plumen 001 lamp has been added to the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert museum.

Described as the world’s first designer energy efficient light bulb, the Plumen 001 was awarded the Brit Insurance Design of the Year in 2011, and has received widespread recognition.

With accolades from the Finnish Design Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Collection in New York, London’s V&A is the latest museum to add the lamp to its permanent collection. It will take pride of place alongside artifacts taken from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and Northern Africa.

The Plumen 001 was designed in partnership by Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson.

Nicolas Roope, Hulger co-founder, said: “Hulger are delighted that the Plumen 001 has been included in the V&A permanent collection.

“This endorsement has helped to move from last year’s buzz and excitement to a longer term presence as both a design object and as a symbol for design’s central role in guiding consumption towards a better place.”

Designed to show the industry that energy efficient lighting didn’t have to be boring and without style or substance, the Plumen 001 was never further developed or modified, helping it gain cult design status.

Samuel Wilkinson, the industrial designer who designed the Plumen 001 with Hulger, said: “It’s really nice to be appreciated in that way and that it joins the permanent collection of V&A alongside such an amazing set of products.

“It’s great to be held up with products of that standard and hopefully now it will stand the test of time as a recognised iconic form.”

Highways Agency proposes dimming of lights on major A-roads

Road lighting

The proposal could see lighting on A-roads dimmed throughout hours of low traffic.

Recent proposals from The Highways Agency could see lights on major A-roads dimmed in a bid to save money and reduce carbon emissions.

The proposals suggest reducing light levels on thousands of miles of A-roads when traffic levels are “very low”.

The plans came to light after Lib Dem local transport minister Norman Baker provided a written answer to a parliamentary question from Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski.

In his reply, Mr Baker Wrote: “The Highways Agency has plans to reduce the level of lighting on A-roads when traffic levels are significantly below road capacity.”

Mr Baker said he supported the move provided safety was not compromised. “The level of light reduction will be based upon internationally agreed standards and made in consultation with the UK’s Institution of Lighting Professionals,” he said.

When asked to comment on the proposals, John McDonnell, managing director at Harvard Engineering − a lighting company specialising in dimming − said: Harvard are big believers in the phrase ‘The right light at the right time’. As a company we believe that reducing the lighting levels through dimming is a much safer and viable alternative to ‘switching off’.”

“CMS systems … make it easy to intelligently control outdoor lighting by setting bespoke lighting levels dependant on time and location. This, like switching off, delivers energy savings but also ensures there is safe and sufficient light levels.”

The Insitute of Lighting Professionals (ILP) also welcomed the move as a much better alternative to the blackouts that local authorities have been implementing recently.

Stuart Bulmer, a member of the Professional Services Team at the ILP, said: “The recent announcement by the Highways Agency to employ the use of dimming in an effort to reduce energy usage and the consequent reduction of carbon is seen by the ILP as a step in the right direction.

“Since 2003 the standards for lighting have given lighting professionals the increased option of dimming the lighting to match the amount of traffic using the highways.

“Prior to this, an accident at a site where the lighting was not to the British Standard could have left the lighting engineer and indeed the Local Authority in a difficult legal position. For whilst there is no mandatory obligation on an Authority to light, if it is in place then it must be maintained to the correct standard to avoid the accusation of being legally negligent.

“This pioneering move by the Highways Agency could signal the onset of a new era in highway lighting and this approach is welcomed by the ILP, rather than that of switching off lighting purely for financial reasons, as has been seen in parts of the country.” Bulmer said.

The research into when and where lighting could be dimmed will begin in the next financial year of 2012/13.
